What camera top mic do you have fitted to your PMW 350/500?

I'm currently pricing up all the kit to buy a PMW 500. There appears to be a range of camera top mics being used. As it's a 5 pin xlr connection for a stereo mic, I was wondering what people had fitted as prices seem to vary quite a bit.

My kit has the 5 pin stereo mic that came with the 350.

Seems OK. Only used for atmos when filming GVs etc. No compaints about its sound.

I use a lot of pool and hired in 500s and they have a variety of different mics but a lot have the old mic off a DSR450WSP (that the 500s replaced) along with a 3pin to 5 pin XLR converter lead. The next step is to choose Mono or Stereo Front Mic option in the audio menu to suit the mic you are using and away you go.

I have used the stereo mic off my HDX900.. when I had hired in a 500 with the Sony mic before i bought my own.. I found that is really long and didnt fit into my portabrace camera bag.. not the end of the world but a pain after a while.. and I wouldnt want to be having to take it off everytime as my own kit..

I know what you mean. I've seen pictures of some top mics that are so long they extend past the lens. The one I think I'm going for is the short top mic - about 5 inches long.

Im sure the Sony mic is very good.. but I only use the cam mic for GV sound.. and having a good wind cutting "Fluffy" is probably more important for me.. and it has to fit into the camera bag
